Finger oximeters are used in measuring oxygen levels in the blood. They are used both in hospitals and at home. Hypoxemia is a term that is used to refer to a condition of low blood oxygen saturation. In hospital, this device is attached to a patient’s finger. The readings are made and monitored by medical professionals from a screen. In that case, examination is painless and non-invasive.
Today, there are portable models of finger oximeters such as the nonin oximeter. Using these devices, an individual can monitor their oxygen saturation in the body. They can do this without the help of medical practitioners. This is of great essence because low supply of oxygen in the blood can lead to dizziness, short breath and fatigue. This could prove fatal for the patient, who is under observation.
To use a nonin oximeter and other oximeters, you need to follow the following steps;
Identify your source of power for the oximeter. In most cases, hand held devices will have a battery. Hospital or commercial devices may require plugging into a power supply. Once, this has been identified, turn the device on by simply pressing power button on. This may vary depending on the model of the device.
Squeeze the oximeter clip to open it. You can do this by simply pressing it down on the material opposite to the sensor.
Slid the finger of the person being examined inside the opened clip of the oximeter. Let clasp close on this finger gently. Once the finger is inside the oximeter, it will produce a beam of red light. There will also be a beam of infrared light shining through the finger. This will determine the arterial blood color. Use this color together with oximeter information to determine level of oxygen saturation in the individual’s blood. Blood color determines the level of oxygen saturation in the blood.
The screen of the device will give the readings. In case there is an error, try using the pointer finger of a different hand. It is also important to know that a strong pulse is required for the oximeter to notice even small changes in blood color.
Instructions of using an oximeter may vary from one brand to another. These are basic instructions. However, majority of them will operate in a similar manner.
It is also important that the individual being examined remain until when all readings are completed.
Immediate medical attention should be sought in case an individual show signs of losing consciousness, breathing problems or even an appearance of blue taint is detected in the mouth.
It is also important that any active patient have oximeter with them all the time. This is because in case they experience breath shortness while driving or doing other activities, the consequences can be dire. Therefore, they should always have this device on as they drive in high attitude and even during flights.

Although finger oximeters such as nonin oximeter may be costly to some people, they are very important. They should be made part of people with hypoxemia to ensure that they live comfortably and without risking their lives.
